A Meeting of Presidents of Ukraine, UN and Turkey

On August 18, the head of Ukraine, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, and Rajep Erdogan met in Lviv

The head of the United Nations came to Ukraine in advance. His meeting with Zelenskyy was announced in advance. According to Turkish media reports, Erdogan flew to Ukraine for one day. His first visit to the country since Russia started a full-scale war. Turkish foreign minister Mevlut Chavushoglu, head of the Turkish national intelligence organization Hakan Fidan and Ibrahim Kalin, were also present at the meeting. Politicians met in the west of Ukraine, in Lviv.

The Turkish side discussed the prospect of a diplomatic settlement of the war. It is worth noting that on the eve, there was information that Putin informed Erdogan about the readiness to enter into negotiations.

It should be noted that on the eve of these negotiations, Volodymyr Zelenskyy ruled out the possibility of negotiations with Russia, even through intermediaries, as long as the aggressor continues the war. Therefore, such statements by Putin could be another provocation and an attempt to expose Ukraine in a negative light.

"We have wanted negotiations for years, knowing that a full-scale invasion could happen at any moment and that we cannot live with the fact that there will be a full-scale war. We understood who our neighbour was and what was going on in general, but Russia chose this path to destroy all that is alive in Ukraine. She didn't need any mediator," said Zelenskyy.

During the meeting, the politicians paid attention to the safety of the nuclear power plant in the Zaporizhzhya region. They also discussed the deportation of Ukrainians and the release from captivity of Ukrainian servicemen and medics.

At that time, in Lviv, Ukrainians held a mass action calling for the release of Ukrainian prisoners of war.
