British Foreign Secretary Arrives in Kyiv, Announces £142 Million to Support Ukraine

Yvette Cooper’s first visit as Foreign Secretary underscores UK’s commitment to Ukraine’s defense, energy resilience, and humanitarian recovery

UK Pledges New Support Package

On the morning of September 12, the newly appointed British Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper arrived in Kyiv, marking her first official visit to Ukraine. During her trip, she announced the allocation of £142 million to help Ukraine withstand the upcoming winter and to provide support throughout 2026.

According to a statement on the UK government’s website, the funds will be directed towards:

  • Strengthening energy resilience and critical infrastructure.

  • Providing humanitarian assistance during the winter period.

  • Supporting long-term programs for recovery and reconstruction.

Meetings with Ukrainian Leadership

Cooper is scheduled to hold talks with President Volodymyr Zelensky and senior government officials. She will reaffirm the UK’s firm commitment to helping Ukraine resist Russian aggression and to supporting Kyiv’s broader path toward European integration.

“The UK stands with Ukraine in defending freedom and sovereignty. This new package demonstrates our long-term commitment, both on the battlefield and in reconstruction,” the Foreign Secretary said.

High-Level Visits to Kyiv

The visit of Yvette Cooper coincided with the arrival of several other prominent figures:

  • Prince Harry, who came to Kyiv at the invitation of the Ukrainian government. He emphasized his personal mission to do “everything possible” to support the recovery of Ukrainian servicemen wounded in combat.

  • Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski, who also arrived in the capital to discuss security cooperation, sanctions against Russia, and regional stability.

Broader UK–Ukraine Partnership

The UK remains one of Ukraine’s closest allies, providing:

  • Military assistance and air defense systems.

  • Financial and humanitarian aid.

  • Joint defense projects, including the Project OCTOPUS interceptor drones program announced earlier.

With this latest commitment, the UK reaffirms its role as a key partner in Ukraine’s defense and recovery.
