Canada Expands Military Aid to Ukraine with M113 and Coyote Armored Vehicles

Canada has stepped up its military support for Ukraine with the transfer of 29 decommissioned M113 armored personnel carriers (APCs) and 64 Coyote light armored vehicles (LAVs)

This announcement was made by Canadian Minister of National Defense Bill Blair, reaffirming Canada’s commitment to assisting Ukraine in its defense against Russian aggression.

The M113 APCs and Coyotes, previously used by the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF), will either be repurposed for operational use by the Ukrainian military or utilized for spare parts.

The Coyote, a light armored reconnaissance vehicle, was designed primarily for battlefield surveillance and intelligence gathering rather than direct combat. It is built on the LAV-25 platform and is equipped with advanced sensors, including radar and long-range cameras, providing essential intelligence for commanders. Its high maneuverability makes it ideal for covering large areas quickly in reconnaissance missions.

Despite its reconnaissance role, the Coyote is armed with a 25mm M242 Bushmaster chain gun and two 7.62mm C6 machine guns, giving it defensive capabilities against lightly armored targets and infantry. While no longer considered cutting-edge in the Canadian arsenal, the Coyote remains a valuable asset for intelligence and support missions, which will be crucial for Ukraine’s ongoing defense efforts.

This new batch of military equipment is part of Canada’s broader commitment to aiding Ukraine as it continues to face challenges from Russia's invasion.
