Based on data from the consumer basket, an index of the minimum subsistence level is being compiled in Ukraine. Note that, unlike other countries, the Ukrainian basket is dominated by food. They occupy more than half of the list.
All items required by one person for 365 days are divided into categories:
- Food (vegetables, sugar, cereals, eggs, sour fruits);
- Non-food items (cleaning, medicines, hygiene products);
- Community and socio-cultural services.
Most attention is paid to food products, as in addition to supplying Ukrainians, the producers export their goods. For example, one child under 6 needs 73 kilograms of potatoes. At the same time, the country annually exports 5.000 commercial potatoes each year.
There are still several products that are shared between the consumer basket and the countries with which exports are made. These are:
- Honey;
- Carrots;
- Cucumbers;
- Beetroot;
- Onions;
- Confectionery products;
- Sour milk products;
- Meat products.
A few years ago, due to the strong demand of Ukrainians, the sale of Ukrainian buckwheat abroad was prohibited. The ban was in force in 2020 and protected the food basket from shortages. The state therefore always welcomes the development of agro-culture.
Also in the list of products for the year, there are goods that Ukraine does not export, but needs to increase production. Among such products is Ukrainian garlic. This vegetable grows only 1% of agricultural firms in Ukraine. Producers own small businesses, so most of the garlic in supermarkets is imported. It should be noted that in a few years the share of Chinese imports of garlic has increased to 73% (up to 5.200 tons) of total shipments. Egypt ranks second, 23% or 1.700 tons, Iran — third (3% or 200 tons).
So, opening a food production company that Ukraine imports from other countries can be a profitable solution for business. Since it is possible to develop activity on the territory of Ukraine, it is possible to work with the foreign buyer and replenish the consumer basket.
