Demining Machines Now Available for Rent and Lease in Ukraine

Ukrainian and international equipment manufacturers are introducing innovative financing options—renting and leasing—to accelerate the humanitarian demining efforts across the country

By enabling operators to temporarily use specialized demining machines, the newly launched programs help mine-action operators scale up capacity without significant upfront investments.

1. A New Approach to Demining Equipment

According to the Ministry of Economy, at least two major manufacturers of demining machines now offer rental or lease options on a systematic basis:

  1. GSC (Swiss-German Company)
    • Provides an option to rent heavy-duty demining machines like the GCS-200.
  2. RoverTech (Ukrainian Manufacturer)
    • Offers the Zmiy demining machine through a leasing agreement with a local Ukrainian bank.

These flexible models empower demining operators—both domestic and international—to quickly scale operations for specific contracts and reduce initial capital expenditures.

2. First Rental Contract: GCS-200 for Danish Church Aid

The first rental agreement has already been signed with Danish Church Aid, an international humanitarian organization:

  • Demining Machine: GCS-200, a heavy-duty vehicle suited for large-scale mine and unexploded ordnance (UXO) clearance.
  • Full Support & Training: GCS Ukraine will train personnel, provide technical support during the rental term, and offer spare parts to ensure uninterrupted operation.
  • Buyout Option: The agreement includes a purchase option at the end of the rental period, allowing Danish Church Aid to convert the rental into full ownership if needed.

Quote:

“The ability for operators not to buy a demining machine, but to rent it increases the possibilities in mine action activities many times,” explained Ihor Bezkaravayny, Deputy Minister of Economy of Ukraine. “For instance, an operator who secures a contract to demine agricultural land can rent a machine, train staff, and complete demining much faster without substantial initial costs.”

3. Leasing Option: RoverTech’s Zmiy Demining Machine

Meanwhile, RoverTech—a Ukrainian manufacturer—has signed an agreement with a Ukrainian bank to lease its Zmiy demining machine:

  • Leasing Benefits: Operators can spread out equipment costs over time, preserving cash flow.
  • Domestic Production: RoverTech’s “Zmiy” is designed with Ukrainian terrain in mind, offering robust performance and local support.

This financial arrangement particularly benefits local demining companies, enabling them to expand capacity or upgrade technology with predictable monthly payments rather than a hefty one-time purchase.

4. Implications for the Humanitarian Demining Market

  1. Wider Access to Specialized Equipment: Rental and leasing models lower the barrier to entry for small or emerging operators, supporting competitive tendering and increasing project capacity.
  2. Faster Contract Fulfillment: Demining contracts can proceed sooner, as operators no longer need months to secure financing.
  3. Stimulated Private-Sector Involvement: More flexible financing encourages new companies to join demining efforts, spurring innovation and efficiency.

Collectively, these developments reflect the maturing market for humanitarian demining in Ukraine, enhancing public safety and economic recovery—especially in regions heavily impacted by landmines and UXO.

Conclusion

With GSC and RoverTech pioneering rental and lease options for heavy-duty demining equipment, Ukraine’s push to clear landmines is taking a significant step forward. Humanitarian and commercial operators can scale operations faster, undertake more projects, and ultimately help make Ukrainian territories safer for communities and investors alike.
