Electric Cars Overtake Gasoline Vehicles in Sales in Ukraine for the First Time

In September 2025, electric cars captured one-third of the Ukrainian new-car market — surpassing gasoline models for the first time in history

A Historic Shift Toward Electric Mobility

For the first time ever, electric cars have overtaken gasoline vehicles in new-car sales in Ukraine, signaling a decisive turning point in the country’s automotive market.

According to industry statistics, fully electric vehicles (EVs) accounted for 33% of new car registrations in September 2025, more than double last year’s level of 15.3%.

This surge marks a new phase in Ukraine’s transportation electrification and aligns with global trends toward sustainable mobility.

Market Breakdown by Fuel Type

The latest data show clear shifts in consumer preferences across all fuel categories:

Type of Vehicle Market Share, Sept 2025 Market Share, Sept 2024 Change (YoY)
Electric (EV) 33.0 % 15.3 % ▲ +17.7 pp
Gasoline 31.2 % 36.8 % ▼ –5.6 pp
Hybrid 20.3 % 21.5 % ▼ –1.2 pp
Diesel 15.3 % 26.0 % ▼ –10.7 pp
LPG (autogas) < 1 % < 1 %

The data reveal that electric cars have “completely overtaken” gasoline models in the national preference ranking for the first time. Hybrids and diesel vehicles also lost market share amid the surge in EV adoption.

Key Models Leading the Market

Among new-car sales in September:

  • Volkswagen ID.Unyx became the overall leader with 432 units sold — consolidating its status as Ukraine’s top electric model.

  • Renault Duster and Toyota RAV4 followed in second and third place, respectively.

Industry Insight

Analysts attribute the EV boom to several factors:

  • The expansion of charging infrastructure across key Ukrainian cities.

  • Lower operating costs compared to gasoline and diesel models.

  • Growing availability of affordable European and Chinese EVs on the Ukrainian market.

  • Supportive government policies promoting import of used EVs and tax exemptions for electric vehicles.

These combined trends are accelerating the shift toward zero-emission transport, even amid wartime economic constraints.

Strategic Outlook

Experts forecast that by 2027, EVs could account for half of all new car sales in Ukraine, supported by private-sector investments in charging networks and growing domestic assembly potential.

The transition is also expected to influence energy demand patterns, strengthening links between Ukraine’s renewable-energy sector and electric-mobility growth.
