Estonia Shows Interest in Purchasing Long-Range Missiles from Ukraine

Defense Minister Hanno Pevkur discusses potential arms deal to enhance Estonia’s military capabilities and support Ukraine’s defense industry

Tallinn, Estonia—Estonian Defense Minister Hanno Pevkur has announced that Estonia is interested in purchasing defense products from Ukraine, specifically focusing on long-range missile systems. This potential collaboration aims to strengthen Estonia's defense capabilities while providing economic support to Ukraine's defense industry.

Pevkur highlighted that cooperation between the two countries could assist Ukraine in scaling up its production of military equipment. He stated that if Estonia proceeds with the purchase, it would benefit both nations:

"If Estonia buys weapons, Ukraine receives more money and will be able to produce more for its army," Pevkur said.

However, the potential deal requires approval from the Ukrainian government due to an existing ban on the export of weapons and military equipment under martial law conditions imposed amid ongoing conflict. Pevkur expressed confidence that this hurdle could be overcome through mutual agreement:

"The export ban will not hurt if the countries reach a mutual agreement," he noted.

Regarding the specific military assets of interest, Pevkur emphasized Estonia's focus on long-range missile systems:

"Long-range missiles are, of course, interesting for us. There are many different options. Of course, we cannot talk in detail, but first of all, we will look at these systems that can affect the enemy at a long range."

The minister underscored that acquiring such weaponry would significantly enhance Estonia's defensive capabilities, allowing it to better deter potential threats. He also mentioned that detailed discussions and evaluations would be necessary to identify the most suitable systems for Estonia's defense needs.

Strengthening Bilateral Defense Cooperation

This development signals a deepening of defense ties between Estonia and Ukraine. Enhanced cooperation could lead to increased production capacity within Ukraine's defense sector and provide Estonia with advanced military technology. Pevkur believes that such partnerships are essential for regional security:

"Collaboration with Ukraine not only supports our own defense readiness but also contributes to the stability and security of our region," he said.

Next Steps

Before any agreement can be finalized, both governments will need to navigate the legal and regulatory challenges posed by Ukraine's export restrictions. Diplomatic efforts are expected to continue to reach a mutually beneficial arrangement.
