EU and Ukraine Launch Joint Task Force to Strengthen Defense Industry Cooperation

In a strategic move to deepen defense ties, the European Union has launched a new Ukraine–EU Task Force on Defense Industry Cooperation, aiming to accelerate Ukraine’s integration into the European defense technological and industrial base

Announced during the Second Ukraine-EU Defense Industry Forum, Charles Fries, Deputy Secretary General of the European External Action Service, emphasized the EU's commitment to supporting Ukraine's defense sector not just militarily, but industrially.

“Today we are launching a new Ukraine-EU Task Force on Defense Industry Cooperation to promote concrete solutions,” Fries stated.

What the Task Force Will Do

The newly established Task Force will:

  • Facilitate joint industrial projects between Ukrainian and EU defense companies.

  • Help streamline certification processes for Ukrainian defense products in the EU.

  • Address supply chain bottlenecks, such as engine production and electronic components.

  • Improve access to defense financing for Ukrainian firms.

  • Support Ukraine’s full integration into European defense supply chains.

Fries acknowledged the challenges ahead, particularly delays in production caused by gaps in component availability and administrative hurdles. However, he expressed confidence that the Task Force would help remove these roadblocks by fostering open dialogue between governments and defense manufacturers.

Context: Strategic Support for Ukraine

This initiative comes at a critical moment:

  • The EU has pledged €1.9 billion in new military support for Ukraine using profits from frozen Russian assets.

  • The move complements the EU’s broader strategy to enhance Ukraine’s self-reliance in defense production.

  • Ukrainian defense exports and domestic manufacturing have increased sharply, but full integration with EU standards remains a priority.

The creation of the Task Force follows a series of joint declarations between Ukraine and EU member states that highlight defense industry cooperation as a pillar of Ukraine’s long-term security and resilience.

Why This Matters

For Ukraine, this marks a turning point in building a sustainable and competitive defense sector. For the EU, it's a signal of long-term commitment to Ukraine—not just in supplying arms, but in co-producing them and sharing technological capabilities.

As Ukraine prepares to rebuild its military and industrial strength in a post-war environment, partnerships like this will be vital in creating jobs, securing funding, and developing next-generation military technologies
