On May 16, during the European Council summit in Reykjavik, Mark Rutte and Rishi Sunak discussed the creation of an international air coalition for Ukraine. The purpose of the coalition is the purchase of F16 fighters, their maintenance, training of Ukrainian pilots, and so on.
"The prime minister reaffirmed his conviction that Ukraine's rightful place is in NATO, and leaders agreed on the importance of long-term Allied security assistance to Ukraine to ensure they can deter future attacks," Downing Street reported.
Also PM Sunak met with Ursula von der Leyen. The parties confirmed their intention to continue supporting Ukraine, including with increased sanctions pressure on Russia. The prime minister's office reports that Sunak and von der Leyen called the G7 summit in Hiroshima on May 19-21 "a moment of demonstration of unity and international support for Ukraine," says the UK PM's administration.
