Germany Confirms Ukraine’s Permission to Strike Military Facilities in Russia with Provided Weapons

The German government has officially confirmed that it permits Ukraine to use German-supplied weapons for attacks on military facilities within the territory of the Russian Federation

According to Steffen Hebestreit, the spokesperson for the German government, Ukraine can "use the weapons provided for this purpose in accordance with its international legal obligations." This includes weapons supplied by Germany.

Hebestreit emphasized that this use of weapons is "about the liberation of Ukrainian territory." He noted that the German government and Ukraine have agreed that the weapons supplied by Germany will be used in accordance with international law.

The statement specifically addresses the ongoing massive Russian attacks in the Kharkiv region, which are "prepared, coordinated, and carried out" from positions in the neighboring border region of the Russian Federation.

"Together, we are convinced that Ukraine has the right under international law to defend itself against these attacks," Hebestreit added.

The Bild publication highlights that Germany is providing Panzerhaubitze 2000 self-propelled guns and Mars II installations (analogous to the American HIMARS) to Ukraine. Considering their firing range, this could mean strikes deep into Russian territory, up to 40 kilometers.

Recently, Ukraine confirmed media reports that the administration of US President Joe Biden secretly approved Ukrainian strikes on Russian territory using American weapons, but limited to areas near the Kharkiv region.
