Germany Proposes International Contact Group for Ukraine Peace Process

Germany’s Social Democratic Party (SPD) is proposing the formation of an international contact group to initiate peace talks aimed at ending the war in Ukraine

Rolf Mützenich, the head of the SPD faction in the Bundestag, emphasized the need to start the peace process and engage multiple countries in this effort.

Mützenich stated that both German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky agree that now is the appropriate time to intensify peace negotiations. He also stressed that Russia should be present at the next peace summit. The proposed contact group would include countries such as Brazil, China, Turkey, and India.

"In these countries, the opinion that the Russian war of aggression can become a burden is growing," Mützenich said, noting that their participation could offer a promising and mediating role in the peace process. This initiative reflects a growing international effort to find a diplomatic resolution to the conflict in Ukraine.
