Iceland’s New Foreign Minister Makes First Visit Abroad to Ukraine

Icelandic Foreign Minister Thorgerdur Katrin Gunnarsdottir arrived in Kyiv on Tuesday, January 7, marking her first foreign visit since taking office

During her trip, she met with her Ukrainian counterpart, Andriy Sybiga, and addressed a joint press conference to express Iceland’s support for Ukraine.

In the press conference, Gunnarsdottir stated, “My first call to a colleague abroad was to you, Andriy. And my first visit to another country is to Ukraine, to emphasize how important it is to show that we support Ukraine.”

The visit comes shortly after Icelandic President Halla Tomasdottir introduced the new government on December 21, led by Social Democrat Kristrun Frostadottir. The meeting between the two foreign ministers underscores the strengthening ties and mutual support between Iceland and Ukraine.
