Iceland’s Parliament Adopts Resolution for Long-Term Support to Ukraine

Iceland’s Parliament, the Althing, has unanimously passed a resolution outlining the country’s long-term support strategy for Ukraine, spanning from 2024 to 2028

This comprehensive support framework aims to bolster Ukraine’s independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity, and enhance civilian security alongside providing humanitarian aid and contributing to reconstruction efforts.

Iceland's Foreign Minister, Thordis Kolbrun Reykford Gylfadottir, expressed her endorsement of the resolution, highlighting its significance for both Iceland and Europe at large. "Our steadfast support for Ukraine is vital, as the very foundations of international law and our collective security and prosperity are jeopardized by Russia's aggressive actions," she stated.

The resolution not only pledges ongoing support but also embeds this commitment within Iceland's fiscal planning, ensuring a sustained and impactful contribution. "This legislative measure, along with the designated funds in our budget, lays a robust groundwork for Iceland’s dedicated assistance to Ukraine," Gylfadottir added.

The proposal was initially introduced by Gylfadottir on October 10 of the previous year and was subsequently brought before the Althing by Prime Minister Bjarni Benediktsson on March 12, 2024.

Additionally, Iceland has previously announced its participation in the Czech-led initiative to finance ammunition for Ukraine and has committed to providing military equipment. Late last year, Iceland declared its involvement in the IT and demining coalitions under the Contact Group on Defense of Ukraine, further solidifying its support amidst the ongoing conflict.
