Japan Hands Over Nearly 100 Units of Heavy Equipment to Ukrainian Utilities

The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has provided significant support to Ukraine by handing over 97 units of heavy equipment to municipal enterprises in Kharkiv, Dnipro, Kherson, and Mykolaiv

This equipment is intended to enhance services in key areas such as transport, water supply, and the processing of debris and waste resulting from the ongoing conflict.

Key Aspects of the Donation:

  • Heavy Equipment: The equipment provided includes various types of heavy machinery essential for rebuilding and maintaining infrastructure in the affected cities.

  • Additional Supplies: Along with the heavy machinery, utilities will also receive generators, pipes, and other critical equipment necessary for restoring basic services, ensuring that essential utilities continue to function in the wake of extensive damage.

  • Commitment to Transparency: Vasyl Shkurakov, Acting Minister of Community Development, Territories, and Infrastructure of Ukraine, emphasized the importance of ensuring that the aid from Japan is utilized in a transparent and accountable manner.

Japan's Broader Support for Ukraine:

  • Demining Efforts: Japan has expressed its willingness to participate in the multinational project to demine Ukrainian territories. Japan, in collaboration with Cambodia, will undertake demining operations in Ukraine, as announced by Japan's Foreign Minister, Yoko Kamikawa, during a visit to Phnom Penh.

  • Financial Assistance: Japan is currently negotiating a loan of $3.3 billion for Ukraine as part of the G7's initiative to use interest from Russian assets to support Ukraine.

Background:

  • Emergency Recovery Program: The grant agreement for the Emergency Recovery Program between JICA and the Ukrainian government was signed on March 9, 2023. The agreement includes a grant of 22.44 billion Japanese yen (approximately $172.75 million) to support the recovery of Ukraine's infrastructure.

  • Other Contributions: Japan has also provided 20 vehicles and five mobile ultrasound diagnostic devices to Ukraine's Ministry of Health. Additionally, more than 100 powerful generators are expected to arrive in Ukraine following an agreement between Ukraine's Minister of Energy, Herman Galushchenko, and JICA leadership.

Japan's continued support highlights its commitment to aiding Ukraine in its recovery and rebuilding efforts amid the ongoing conflict.
