The president of Ukraine will consider the request of Ukrainians to consider renaming the neighbouring country at the official level. People are calling for the restoration of justice, historical truth, and a permanent break from any resemblance to Russia. According to the text of the petition, the Russian Federation used to be called Moscovia. This is evidenced by documents written in European and Asian languages. However, the current name gives the aggressor a reason to steal Ukrainian territory under the pretext of history.
"For foreigners, the names Rus (as called Kievan Rus on the maps) and Russia, Russie, Russland (as Russia was called) look almost exactly like the name of the same state, which has undergone certain changes over time and during translations into different languages. This leads to confusion at the international level," explained the author of the petition.
This data is confirmed by the authoritative historian and Yale University professor Timothy Snyder.
It will help to dispel the myth about the unity of Ukrainians and Russians, ownership of Ukrainian territories in Moscow, and other narratives of the Kremlin. 25.000 Ukrainians signed such an appeal to Volodymyr Zelenskyy. They believe that this is a strong move against Russia in the information war. In 2018, a similar appeal from Ukrainians did not receive enough votes, so it did not get to the consideration of the former head of the country, Petro Poroshenko.
