Marine Environmental Strategy of Ukraine

The document is extremely important for the implementation of approaches to EU legislation in the field of protection and use of the marine environment of Ukraine

It implements the provisions of the EU Marine investing-in-ukraine/service-for-investors/strategy-development/" rel="dofollow">strategy framework directive into Ukrainian law. This is provided by the environmental block of the association agreement between Ukraine and the EU.

The Marine environmental strategy defines:

  • the main principles of the state marine environmental policy for the period up to 2034;
  • mechanisms for achieving and maintaining the "good" ecological status of the Azov and Black Seas.

"Due to the pollution of the Azov-Black Sea basin, the imbalance of economic activity, and the negative impact of climate change, the state of marine ecosystems are deteriorating. This requires systemic solutions and new approaches to marine management. EU countries have created a clear mechanism for sustainable marine management — the Marine strategy framework directive. From now on, Ukraine is moving in this direction as well. After all, the approval of the Marine environmental strategy introduces sustainable approaches to EU legislation in the field of protection and use of the marine environment of Ukraine," said minister of environment and natural resources of Ukraine Roman Abramovskyy.

Among the main tasks of the strategy:

  • writing and implementing maritime national action plans to achieve and maintain the "good" ecological status of the Azov and Black Seas for a six-year period;
  • implementation of the program of state ecological monitoring of the seas of Ukraine;
  • development and implementation of plans for integrated management of the coastal areas of the Azov and Black Seas.
