How Ukrainians abroad can send money home

Card transfers, international systems and bank payments remain the main channels

Ukrainians living abroad continue to support relatives at home through cross-border transfers. The most common options are international money transfer systems, card-to-card payments and bank transfers using IBAN or SWIFT details.

The best method depends on the country of the sender, the amount, urgency and whether the recipient needs money on a card, in a bank account or in cash. For smaller urgent transfers, digital platforms and card payments are often more convenient. For larger official payments, bank channels remain important.

Cost, speed and verification

International systems are useful when the sender does not have a foreign bank account or when cash pickup is needed. Fintech services can be cheaper and faster, especially when the transfer goes directly to a card.

Bank transfers through IBAN or SWIFT are usually more appropriate for larger sums and formal transactions. They may take longer, but they provide a clearer payment trail and are familiar to banks and compliance departments.

Before sending money, users should check the total cost, exchange rate, transfer limit and recipient details. A small difference in conversion or commission can matter, especially for regular support payments to family in Ukraine.
