Odessa Region Ports Export More Grain Than Before the War

Odessa’s Black Sea ports have not only recovered, but surpassed pre-war export volumes, especially in the agricultural sector

According to Oleg Kiper, Head of the Odessa Regional Military Administration (OVA), over 5,000 vessels have passed through the region’s ports since August 2024, contributing to 60% of Ukraine’s export-related economic activity.

🚢 Odessa’s Strategic Role in Ukrainian Grain Exports

Despite constant Russian shelling, Odessa’s port workers continue to operate under extreme conditions, ensuring the uninterrupted flow of goods, particularly grain exports. This has become a backbone of Ukraine’s wartime economy.

We have increased the volumes of grain even compared to pre-war indicators… Thanks to this, we support the economy of all of Ukraine, since 60% of exports go through our ports,” — Oleg Kiper, Head of Odessa OVA

📈 Key Figures

  • 5,000+ vessels used the sea corridor from August 2024 to April 2025.

  • 60% of all Ukrainian export income comes via Odessa region ports.

  • Grain export volumes have exceeded pre-2022 levels despite infrastructure attacks.

🔧 Resilience Under Fire

Kiper emphasized the constant repair and restoration of port infrastructure damaged by missile and drone attacks. Despite these challenges, port teams are:

  • Maintaining operations;

  • Replacing or upgrading damaged equipment;

  • Implementing new logistics strategies to adapt to war conditions.

This adaptability ensures global food security and maintains Ukraine’s status as a key grain exporter.

🌍 Growing Interest from Foreign Companies

Odessa’s ports have also seen a rise in international partnerships, with more foreign companies joining cooperation efforts in logistics, trade, and infrastructure investment.

This trend is expected to strengthen further with the recent U.S.-Ukraine mineral agreement, which includes provisions supporting port infrastructure and logistics development, particularly in southern Ukraine.

🔄 Related Developments

  • Cotton production revival in Odessa region aligns with strategic use of southern lands.

  • New investment fund with the U.S. may channel capital into expanding and modernizing port facilities.

🧭 Outlook

The performance of Odessa region ports is not just a logistics success story, but a symbol of Ukraine’s resilience, innovation, and international integration under war conditions. With growing export capacity and foreign engagement, Odessa is solidifying its role as Ukraine’s maritime and economic gateway.
