Poland Invests Nearly €60 Million in Border Transport Infrastructure with Ukraine

Warsaw directs €57.6 million from the Interreg NEXT 2021–2027 program to modernize cross-border roads, railways, and logistics links with Ukraine

Strategic Cross-Border Investments

Poland has announced a €57.6 million investment in the modernization of transport infrastructure along the Polish–Ukrainian border, strengthening trade and logistics connectivity between the two nations.
The initiative is financed through the Interreg NEXT Poland–Ukraine 2021–2027 program, which supports regional cooperation and integration between EU and partner countries.

According to Poland’s Ministry of Funds and Regional Policy, €52.5 million will be directed toward large-scale road and rail projects, while €5.1 million will support smaller initiatives related to the circular economy and sustainable regional development.

Infrastructure Development Goals

The program focuses on improving border-region transport, reducing travel time for residents, and making freight transportation faster and safer.
These upgrades are part of broader efforts to improve connectivity between Poland and Ukraine amid rising cargo volumes and reconstruction logistics.

“The investments will improve road safety, reduce travel time, and strengthen trade links between Poland and Ukraine,”
— Ministry of Funds and Regional Policy of Poland.

Key Projects Funded

🚗 Road Modernization Projects — €41.85 million

Four road infrastructure projects will be implemented on the Polish side near:

  • Augustów,

  • Tomaszów Lubelski,

  • Sokołów Podlaski, and

  • Krościenko.

These works will enhance access to key crossings and facilitate more efficient transport flows.

🚆 Rail Modernization — €10.72 million

Funds will be used to repair rail line No. 101 and modernize the Verchrata station in Poland, while on the Ukrainian side, reconstruction will begin at Lviv railway station — a critical logistics hub for east–west freight.

🛣️ Joint Road Upgrades — €9.7 million

The project includes improvements near Augustów and Kovel on the Ukrainian side to strengthen continuity across the border.

🚛 Safer Transport Corridors — €7.4 million

Modernization works will be carried out in Tomaszów-Lubelski and Klevan, enabling faster and safer transportation for passengers and goods.

🌉 Bridge and Border Access — €8.1 million

In the Masovian Voivodeship (Poland) and Ternopil Region (Ukraine), new infrastructure includes:

  • construction of a new road section in Sokołów Podlaski,

  • bridge reconstruction in Terebovlia.

🚧 Border Crossings — €16.5 million

Funds will go toward the reconstruction of roads leading to the Krościenko–Smilnytsia crossing, as well as repairs in:

  • Bolekhiv (Ivano-Frankivsk region),

  • Nahirne (Lviv region),

  • Zhornava (Zakarpattia region).

Impact and Outlook

The investments under the Interreg NEXT program will:

  • enhance regional mobility and cross-border logistics;

  • strengthen EU–Ukraine economic integration;

  • improve infrastructure resilience in anticipation of higher trade flows during Ukraine’s reconstruction phase.

By the end of 2027, the upgraded infrastructure is expected to reduce freight bottlenecks, shorten delivery times, and increase export-import capacity across one of Europe’s busiest border corridors.
