Road routes are carrying more value-added exports
Poultry meat has become the largest item in Ukraine’s agricultural exports by road in the first half of July 2026. According to market data cited by SPIKE BROKERS, agricultural shipments through road checkpoints reached 146.7 thousand tonnes during the period, and the largest share came not from grain, but from poultry products.
The Polish direction remains the main route for road agricultural exports. This matters because the structure of cargo is changing. Bulk grain still depends heavily on seaports, while higher-value and more compact products can move more efficiently by truck, especially when time, cold-chain discipline and delivery flexibility matter.
Why poultry fits the road corridor
The shift reflects pressure on Ukraine’s maritime logistics after repeated Russian attacks on Odesa port infrastructure and complications in deepwater export routes. Road transport cannot replace ports for millions of tonnes of grain, but it can become a resilient backup channel for products with higher value per tonne.
Poultry meat is better suited to this model than raw bulk crops. It requires veterinary control, refrigeration, packaging and strict delivery timing, but its value density makes road transport economically more reasonable. For producers, this creates a direct link between processing depth, logistics quality and export resilience.
Signal for agribusiness and investors
The data shows that Ukraine’s agri-export system is becoming more diversified under pressure. Ports remain essential for grain, oilseeds and large-volume commodities. At the same time, road corridors are increasingly important for processed products, chilled goods and cargo that can justify more expensive logistics.
For investors, the trend points to cold storage, food safety infrastructure, border logistics, certified processing and specialized trucking. The more Ukraine develops value-added agriculture, the more important these segments become. Poultry leading the road export list is therefore not just a statistical detail, but a signal of how the export model is adapting during wartime.
