Kyiv, October 11, 2024—Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has announced plans for a new model of military cooperation with France, focusing on the joint production of weapons and defense equipment. This initiative aims to enhance Ukraine's defense capabilities by attracting investments to establish new factories and production facilities within the country.
In a recent video message, President Zelensky stated that discussions are already underway at the ministerial level between Ukraine and France. He highlighted the successful "Danish model" of cooperation, where partner governments invest in weapon production, and expressed optimism about adopting a similar approach with France.
"The Danish model is already working, where the governments of partner states attract investments in the production of weapons," Zelensky said. "We consider the new French model as an opportunity to attract investments in the creation of new factories."
He emphasized that realizing this cooperation is a personal task for the Minister of Defense, and the Ministry of Strategic Industries is responsible for ensuring the implementation of all agreements. The President noted that new arms agreements have been secured in recent weeks, involving not only the supply of weapons but also local production.
Discussions with President Macron
President Zelensky recently discussed the joint production of weapons with French President Emmanuel Macron. The leaders addressed key issues such as:
- Ammunition Supplies: Exploring ways to bolster Ukraine's ammunition stockpiles.
- Lifting Restrictions: Discussing the removal of limitations on Ukraine's use of Western long-range weapons.
- Funding for Attack Drones: Attracting investment to enable Ukraine to produce more of its own attack drones.
Zelensky expressed gratitude to Macron for France's support in training and equipping the Ukrainian brigade named after Anna of Kyiv. President Macron had visited the brigade's training facility the day before their meeting, demonstrating France's commitment to Ukraine's defense efforts.
Clarification on Ceasefire Discussions
Following his meeting with President Macron, President Zelensky clarified that there was no mention of a "ceasefire" in their negotiations. Instead, the focus was on Ukraine's "victory plan" and strengthening military cooperation to ensure long-term security and peace.
