Ukraine prepares to push on Russia through the UN

The Ukrainian government has announced that it will officially request the United Nations to create a new "international mechanism" for compensation. First of all, Kyiv wants Russia to return more than $300 billion as compensation for the damage done during the war. This was reported by the minister of justice of Ukraine, Denys Maluska.

"Our goal is to have a resolution adopted at the special session of the UN General Assembly in October that will lay the foundation for an international reparations mechanism. To do this, we need the support of a majority of two-thirds of the countries present," said the minister about the forthcoming UN General Assembly.

It is worth noting that the amount that Kyiv wants to recover is minimal. In fact, since February 24, 2022, the Russian Federation has caused much more damage. The European Commission and the World Bank estimated the cost of Ukraine's recovery at $349 billion. Ukraine participated in the joint assessment.

All three sides estimated that the current costs of reconstruction and rehabilitation of Ukraine are $349 billion. But it is not ruled out that this figure will grow in the coming months due to the actions of the Russian invaders and the liberation of the territories they previously seized.

"The EU cannot match the sacrifices that Ukraine is making, but we are mobilizing all our tools to meet the most pressing needs. The EU will go at every step with Ukraine to restore a democratic, independent, and prosperous country on its way to the EU," said the president of the Commission European Ursula von der Leyen.
