European and Canadian members of NATO will supply more than €35 billion in additional defence assistance to Ukraine over the next twelve months, NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte confirmed during his pre-summit briefing (24 June).
“Our support is unwavering. Russia continues its war with help from North Korea, Iran, China and Belarus, so we are stepping up,” Rutte said.
The figure represents a 75 % jump on the initial €20 bn estimate announced earlier this year. Formal endorsement is expected at the 24-25 June summit, where allies will also debate lifting national defence spending towards 5 % of GDP.
