Security and European Integration at the Core
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky held a constructive meeting with the Prime Minister of Slovakia Robert Fico on September 5. According to Zelensky, the talks focused on security guarantees, Ukraine’s EU accession, and regional cooperation.
The Ukrainian leader emphasized that Slovakia has expressed readiness to play an active role in building a modern European security architecture together with Ukraine and its allies within the “Coalition of the Willing.”
“Russian oil, like Russian gas, has no future. Slovakia supports Ukraine in its move towards the European Union. This is very significant. We also see that Ukraine and Moldova should continue to move together towards membership in the EU,” Zelensky noted.
Energy Independence and Regional Cooperation
Special attention was given to energy independence and reducing Europe’s reliance on Russian energy carriers. Both leaders agreed that the future of the region lies in:
-
Phasing out Russian oil and gas.
-
Expanding joint infrastructure projects.
-
Strengthening bilateral economic and energy ties.
Zelensky underlined that deeper cooperation between Ukraine and Slovakia in the energy, economic, and infrastructure sectors would bring tangible benefits to both nations.
Fico’s China Visit and Future Dialogue
The meeting also addressed the results of Prime Minister Fico’s recent visit to China, where he attended the September 3 military parade in Beijing and met with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
After returning to Europe, Fico plans to continue talks with Zelensky during a bilateral meeting in Uzhhorod, confirming Bratislava’s willingness to remain engaged in dialogue despite complex geopolitical contexts.
Strengthening Bilateral Relations
President Zelensky thanked Slovakia for its consistent support of Ukraine’s European integration and stressed Kyiv’s readiness to intensify cooperation.
The two leaders reaffirmed their commitment to:
-
Political cooperation in support of EU membership.
-
Joint energy projects to ensure independence from Russia.
-
Infrastructure development that strengthens regional stability.
🔑 Conclusion: Slovakia’s confirmation of support for Ukraine’s EU path and joint security efforts highlights the growing importance of regional partnerships in Central and Eastern Europe. With energy independence and defense cooperation at the center, Kyiv and Bratislava are shaping a shared European future.
