SOCAR and Naftogaz of Ukraine have been tasked with working through the technical details of potential Azerbaijani gas supplies to the Ukrainian market. The issue was discussed last year, but implementation was delayed after an explosion and accident on a transport line.
Azerbaijani officials say the project remains relevant. At the technical level, the two companies are studying options that could make supplies possible, but no clear launch date has been named.
What makes the route difficult
The main challenge is transportation. Gas must move through a route that is technically available, commercially viable and secure enough under wartime conditions. That makes the project more complex than a simple supplier-buyer agreement.
Security is a separate factor. Any energy route into Ukraine must account for infrastructure risk, physical protection, capacity constraints and the operational reliability of transit corridors.
Energy security signal
For Ukraine, Azerbaijani gas would add another diversification channel. It would not replace the need for domestic production, storage discipline or European market integration, but it could strengthen resilience during periods of high demand.
SOCAR already has a visible presence in Ukraine through its fuel-station network and broader energy cooperation. If the gas route is eventually implemented, it would deepen that relationship and create another link between the Black Sea, South Caucasus and Ukrainian energy markets.
