Sweden Announces Largest Military Aid Package for Ukraine

The Swedish Defense Ministry has unveiled its largest military aid package to Ukraine thus far, valued at 13.5 billion Swedish kronor (approximately $1.22 billion, based on the Central Bank of Sweden’s exchange rate)

This latest tranche is designed to bolster Ukraine’s long-range strike capabilities and overall defense capacity.

Key Highlights of the Aid Package

  1. Long-Range Systems and Drones

    • 1 billion SEK (about $90.7 million) will be allocated to developing and producing Ukrainian long-range missiles and drones.
  2. Investments in Defense Industry Products

    • 45% of the aid package—roughly $534 million—is slated for new defense industry procurements to meet priorities such as artillery, long-range strike capabilities, and unmanned aerial vehicles.
    • “Short delivery times are important,” Swedish Defense Minister Pål Jonson wrote on social media, emphasizing a rapid supply of this new equipment.
  3. Support Through International Funds

    • About $250 million will be channeled into various international funds assisting Ukraine.
    • An additional $178 million is targeted toward the “Danish model,” aimed at rallying global contributions to support Ukraine’s defense-industrial base.

Largest Military Aid Effort to Date

  • This marks Sweden’s 18th military assistance package for Ukraine, bringing the total value of Swedish aid since Russia’s full-scale invasion began to approximately 61.9 billion SEK (over $5.61 billion).
  • The package consists of eight components, with the biggest share comprising acquisitions of newly produced equipment—mainly from Swedish and other European defense industries—for Ukraine’s Armed Forces.

Specific Items Included

  • 16 additional CB 90 combat boats
  • 146 trucks
  • 1,500 TOW anti-tank missiles
  • 23 naval weapon stations
  • 1 million rounds of 12.7 mm ammunition
  • 200 anti-tank weapons
  • Protective gear against chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear threats

Broader Context

  • Consistent Support: Sweden has continuously backed Ukraine against Russian aggression through the transfer of boats, artillery, and armored vehicles.
  • Three-Year Commitment: In May 2024, the Swedish government approved a 75 billion kronor (around $7 billion) three-year military support program for Ukraine, underscoring its long-term commitment to strengthening Ukraine’s defense capabilities.
