Sweden Donates Over $10 Million to Ukraine for Humanitarian Aid Ahead of Winter

Sweden has announced a new humanitarian aid package to Ukraine worth 110 million Swedish kronor (over $10 million USD) to support the humanitarian needs of Ukrainians as winter approaches

Announcement by the Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs

The Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported that the funds will address urgent humanitarian needs resulting from the ongoing conflict, which has severely impacted Ukraine's energy infrastructure.

"Russia has destroyed a significant portion of Ukraine's power plants, leading to critical shortages of heat and electricity as winter nears," the ministry stated.

Allocation of Funds

The aid will be distributed among four organizations to maximize its impact:

  1. Ukrainian Red Cross Society

    • Amount: $4.7 million
    • Purpose: Provide essential humanitarian support before winter, including access to heating and electricity, food supplies, hygiene products, and clean water.
  2. United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR)

    • Amount: $1.8 million
    • Purpose: Assist internally displaced persons within Ukraine.
  3. United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)

    • Amount: $2.8 million
    • Purpose: Support demining efforts to ensure safety in affected regions.
  4. United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA)

    • Amount: $941,000
    • Purpose: Promote gender equality, provide reproductive health services, and empower youth.

Addressing Urgent Humanitarian Needs

The Swedish government emphasized that the aid is crucial to help Ukrainians cope with the challenges posed by the winter season, especially in light of damaged energy infrastructure.

"The funds will also support refugees and women who have suffered from violence," the ministry added.
