Sweden to Supply Ukraine with Radar Reconnaissance Aircraft and Gripen Fighters

Stockholm Expands Military Aid, Coordinating with Nordic and NATO Partners

New Phase of Nordic Defense Support

Sweden has officially announced plans to transfer radar reconnaissance aircraft and Gripen fighters to Ukraine as part of a new defense assistance package.
The announcement was made by Swedish Minister of Defense Paul Jönsson on October 16 ahead of the NATO defense ministers’ meeting in Brussels.

According to Jönsson, Sweden is determined to increase support for Kyiv in close coordination with Norway, Denmark, and other NATO partners, emphasizing that regional cooperation is key to maintaining stable and long-term military assistance.

€250 Million Package with Nordic Partners

As part of the second joint support package, Sweden has allocated €250 million to strengthen Ukraine’s defense capabilities.
The funds are part of a broader trilateral effort with Norway and Denmark, which aims to evenly distribute financial and logistical responsibilities among the Nordic countries.

“Such cooperation is important for ensuring stable and sustainable support for Ukraine’s defense,”
said Jönsson during the ministerial briefing.

Focus on Air Defense and Coordination

At the initial stage, Stockholm plans to provide radar reconnaissance and early warning aircraft, which will help the Ukrainian Air Force coordinate F-16 fighter operations more effectively, enhance situational awareness, and strengthen the national air defense network.

These aircraft — similar in role to Sweden’s ASC 890 long-range radar detection system — are designed to monitor vast airspaces, detect incoming threats early, and integrate data with allied command networks.

Deliveries of ASC 890 aircraft to Ukraine are reported to be progressing on schedule, though minor technical adjustments are underway to ensure full compatibility with F-16 systems and Ukraine’s defense infrastructure.

Gripen Fighters: Next Step in Cooperation

Sweden and Ukraine are also discussing the potential transfer of JAS 39 Gripen multirole fighters — a move that would significantly enhance Ukraine’s air combat and interception capabilities.

Jönsson noted that pilot training complexity remains a key factor, as Ukrainian crews are simultaneously mastering F-16s and Mirage aircraft, but the addition of Gripens would “greatly increase flexibility and air dominance.”

Negotiations on the final configuration and delivery timeline are ongoing, with Kyiv expressing strong interest in acquiring Swedish fighters.

Strategic Coordination Within the Aviation Coalition

Sweden continues to coordinate its actions through the international aviation coalition, working with partners to determine the most effective assistance formats and synchronization of deliveries.

The coalition’s shared objective is to ensure interoperability between aircraft types, radar systems, and command centers — a critical factor in Ukraine’s evolving air defense strategy.

Outlook: Reinforcing Ukraine’s Air Power

The planned deliveries mark a new phase of Nordic involvement in Ukraine’s defense effort.
If implemented, the combination of radar reconnaissance aircraft and Gripen fighters will provide Ukraine with enhanced early warning capabilities, improved coordination across air defense assets, and increased resilience against missile and drone attacks.

With Sweden joining Denmark, Norway, and the Netherlands in bolstering Kyiv’s air power, Europe’s northern partners are cementing their role as long-term guarantors of Ukraine’s security and stability.
