New batch for the Defense Forces
The Armed Forces of Ukraine have received a batch of “Volodar Obriu” sniper rifles chambered in 12.7×114HL, along with innovative polymer-cased cartridges. According to the manufacturer, the delivery included six rifles and several hundred rounds of ammunition, marking the beginning of serial production.
Why polymer cartridges matter
The polymer sleeve is a breakthrough in ammunition technology:
-
reduces the weight of cartridges by several dozen percent,
-
eases logistics for large-caliber systems,
-
allows for more efficient ammunition handling in combat.
Although polymer cases have been under development globally since the 1950s, they have not yet seen wide military adoption. The Ukrainian solution could become one of the first to enter active combat use.
Technical details of the 12.7×114HL
-
Based on a re-pressed 14.5×114 mm case (originally for the KPVT machine gun).
-
Loads a 12.7 mm (.50 BMG) projectile.
-
Cartridge length: 16 cm.
-
High powder volume enables acceleration of a heavy bullet to high speeds, maintaining energy for stable flight beyond 2,000 meters.
This design combines Soviet-era case dimensions with modern engineering, achieving both range and precision.
From prototype to production
-
January 2025: Volodar Obriu announced completion of R&D and testing of polymer cases.
-
Challenge: scarcity of brass 14.5×114 cases in Ukraine limited earlier mass production.
-
Solution: collaboration with Ukrainian polymer specialists led to a viable high-strength polymer sleeve alternative.
The result is a domestically produced, innovative ammunition line that strengthens Ukraine’s defense industry and provides snipers with lighter, longer-range, high-energy rounds.
