The First Airport Opens in Ukraine

The first airport opens in the city of Uzhhorod. It's safe as its runway starts in Slovakia

The governor of the Transcarpathian region Volodymyr Chubirko announced the allocation of 26 million hryvnias (at the rate of 39.75 hryvnias per dollar) for the restoration of the airport in the city of Uzhhorod. So far, the use of the airport will be available only for Ukrainian companies located in Europe.

The peculiarity of the airport is that it is located in the mountains. Because of this, the threshold of the runway is located almost 500 meters from the Ukrainian-Slovak border. Therefore, the airspace of Slovakia is used for landing aircraft at the Uzhhorod airport.

Despite the war and closed airspace in Uzhhorod, they plan to open the airport for passenger traffic.

"The financing of the Uzhhorod airport has been significantly raised. The statutory fund has been increased by ₴26 million. The former minus — the runway that starts abroad, has become its plus. We must use it,'' Volodymyr Chubirko.

According to the city council of Uzhhorod, the expected opening time of the airport is 1 to 2 months.
