The Parliament of Ukraine has legislated to allow men to take parental leave

A bill entitled "Amending certain laws to ensure equal opportunities for mother and father in the care of the child" has been adopted, giving men the right to take parental leave up to 3 years of age

Based on the experience of such prosperous countries as Iceland, Sweden, China, Norway, France, Great Britain, Denmark, the Government decided to optimize the process of child-care leave, thereby strengthening the institution of the family and the general welfare of the country.

"The bill proposes to ensure equal opportunities for father and mother in the care of the child and in reconciling work and family obligations. Address legislative gaps that limit a man’s right to leave to care for his child. Create conditions for strengthening the role of the father in the process of raising children and developing responsible parenthood in Ukraine", is noted in the explanatory memorandum to the draft law.

Parental leave is granted to:

  • To a man whose wife gave birth to a child
  • The father of a child who is not married to the mother but both parents live together in a common household, have reciprocal rights and duties

According to the bill, "leave to care for a child up to the age of 3 is an equal right of both parents (father and mother)". Also in the case of care of an adult child with disability group I since childhood, both parents are entitled to additional leave.
