Turkey Proposes to Withdraw the Right of Veto From Russia

The opinion appeared because of the Russian imposition of a ban on all decisions aimed at stopping the aggression against Ukraine

Russia still has the right to veto the decisions of the UN Security Council. Using this opportunity, representatives of the Russian Federation block any decisions of the council connected with the Russian Federation, including those aimed at stopping the crimes on its part. Therefore, Turkish foreign minister Mevlit Chavushoglu said that it is necessary to limit this possibility for Russia. He said that his country supports the abolition of the right of veto in the UN Security Council. This was reported by the Turkish agency Anadolu.

The introduction of majority decision-making may replace the veto. In the opinion of the Turkish foreign ministry, there should be no revocation of any decision in the Security Council because of one country, especially if it concerns crimes. It was, therefore necessary to ensure maximum fairness in any decision-making.

Turkey also insists on reforming the UN, and an increasing number of countries agree with this view. For example, the US supports reform and the abolition of the veto. The Turkish foreign minister calls on the members of the organization to action, as the recent announcement of partial mobilization in the Russian Federation does not lead to the end of the war and the cessation of the commission of crimes in the territory of a foreign country.
