Ukraine and Belgium are discussing ways to expand cooperation in the defense-industrial sphere. The agenda focuses on moving from purchases to joint production in Ukraine, deeper technology transfer, and long-term maintenance and training partnerships.
Belgian and Ukrainian counterparts are evaluating opportunities in air-defense components, unmanned systems, electronic warfare, secure communications, and ammunition supplies, alongside MRO (maintenance, repair, overhaul) capacities inside Ukraine.
For Kyiv, localization is a priority: building lines in Ukraine shortens logistics, stabilizes supply, and creates high-skill jobs. For Belgian industry, the partnership offers access to a fast-scaling market, EU funding instruments tied to Ukraine’s reconstruction, and co-development prospects with proven battlefield feedback.
Key tracks under consideration:
-
Joint production and licensed assembly in Ukraine
-
Technology transfer with safeguards and IP frameworks
-
Lifecycle support: local MRO hubs, spare parts, and training
-
Investment tools to de-risk projects and insure war-related risks
-
Integration with EU supply chains and NATO-interoperable standards
If finalized, the roadmap would complement Ukraine’s broader shift toward multi-year defense procurement and industrial scaling, while giving Belgian companies a structured role in co-producing systems needed at the front and for long-term deterrence.
For investors, watch for: concrete MoUs, selected pilot lines (ammo, drones, EW/communications), insurance/guarantee packages, and site choices near logistics corridors and skilled labor pools.
