Official signing at the UN
During the 80th session of the UN General Assembly, Ukraine and Papua New Guinea officially established diplomatic relations. The announcement was made by Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiga on the social network X, Ukrinform reports.
“I had the honor to sign the relevant Joint Communiqué with my colleague Justin Tkachenko. For us, this is not just a symbolic gesture, but an important step that opens up new opportunities for cooperation,” Sybiga said.
Areas of cooperation
According to the Ukrainian Foreign Minister, the new stage of bilateral relations will focus on:

global food security,

digital technologies,

humanitarian initiatives.
Sybiga emphasized that Papua New Guinea has demonstrated clear and principled support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, which Kyiv highly values.
Broader diplomatic context
The Minister noted that strengthening ties with countries in the Asia-Pacific region will contribute to international solidarity, peace, and respect for international law.
Meanwhile, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that Ukraine and Syria have signed a Joint Communiqué on the restoration of diplomatic relations, marking another step in Kyiv’s global diplomatic outreach.
