A long-term energy bridge
Ukraine has proposed a thirty-year energy cooperation agreement with Canada. The idea centers on an energy-security bridge that could include Canadian liquefied natural gas, support for gas purchases before the heating season and wider cooperation on infrastructure equipment.
Kyiv is also inviting Canadian companies to use Ukrainian underground gas storage facilities. This could turn storage capacity into a regional service for partners while helping Ukraine build a more diversified gas supply system.
SMR technology enters the agenda
Small modular reactors are another part of the proposed partnership. Canada has experience in nuclear technology and SMR development, while Ukraine is looking for resilient generation options that can support the power system during wartime and reconstruction.
The possible package therefore covers fuel, storage, equipment and future generation. Such a broad structure is important because Ukraine’s energy security cannot depend on one technology or one route.
Investment angle
For investors, the proposal points to opportunities in gas logistics, storage services, grid equipment, modular generation and cross-border energy finance. The strongest projects will be those that combine security needs with bankable infrastructure models.
