Ukraine sees defense exports as a future source of economic strength

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy says weapons exports should support production, jobs and technology

Ukraine wants to turn its defense sector into one of the drivers of long-term economic strength. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Ukrainian weapons exports should become a stable source of revenue, while the country’s wartime technologies are already drawing attention abroad.

The argument is broader than sales. Ukrainian drones, electronic warfare systems and other defense solutions have been tested under real battlefield conditions. That experience creates demand, but it also requires a careful regulatory model so companies can enter foreign markets without weakening national security or violating international rules.

Industry, control and investment

For manufacturers, an export framework could bring financing for modernization, larger production runs and new engineering jobs. For the state, it could create another channel of economic resilience and reduce dependence on short-term budget support.

The key challenge is balance. Ukraine needs to protect sensitive technologies, prioritize domestic defense needs and still let companies scale. A transparent licensing and control system will therefore be as important as the products themselves.

If the model works, defense exports could connect security, high-tech production and investment in one industrial strategy.
