These new munitions are designed to counter the relentless missile attacks by Russian forces targeting civilian areas.
A video recently surfaced online showing a Ukrainian Su-24 bomber carrying what appears to be a prototype of the gliding bomb. According to Forbes, Ukraine is developing these bombs in response to the need for high-precision aerial munitions, similar to Western-made systems. In June, Air Force Brigadier General Serhiy Golubtsov announced the development of a planning and guidance kit capable of converting Soviet-era unguided bombs into GPS-guided precision munitions.
These new bombs, equipped with wings and rocket boosters, are comparable to the French Hammer bombs, which have a range of up to 65 kilometers. With this new development, Ukraine is poised to reduce its dependence on Western arms supplies and gain greater flexibility in targeting, potentially bypassing current restrictions on strikes inside Russian territory.
If mass production of these bombs is realized, Ukraine will enhance its strategic capabilities and increase its defense autonomy.
