What happened
The State Statistics Service of Ukraine announced the launch of an updated approach to classifying economic activities. This system is used to group all business, industrial, service and public-sector activities in the country so that statistics, reporting, registers and regulations use the same “language”. Derzhstat explained that the update is needed to align Ukrainian statistics with modern European practices and to make data on the economy more accurate.
Why this classification matters
-
it is used in statistical reporting and surveys;
-
banks, tax authorities and other state bodies often refer to these codes;
-
it helps the state see which sectors are growing, which are shrinking, and where support is needed;
-
for business, it reduces mistakes when registering or changing the type of activity.
Who is affected
-
enterprises and LLCs that report to Derzhstat;
-
budget and municipal institutions that are accounted for in the statistics system;
-
individual entrepreneurs (FOPs) who indicate types of activity when registering or changing data;
-
state bodies that exchange data with the statistical service.
What exactly is changing
Derzhstat clarified that the renewed classification does not radically change the model of reporting for business, but:
-
some activity names are specified and brought closer to international wording;
-
individual positions are grouped or, on the contrary, separated if the market has grown;
-
technical explanations are added so that companies can choose the correct code without additional requests.
How business should act
-
Check your current activity code in the registration documents or statistical certificate.
-
Compare it with the updated explanation — in many cases the existing code will remain valid.
-
If the company sees that its actual activity is now described by another, more precise position, it is worth updating the data so that statistics and regulators receive correct information.
-
When registering a new activity, use the clarified wording so as not to receive requests from Derzhstat later.
What the state wants to achieve
The statistical service notes that a clear classification is especially important during recovery and restructuring of the economy. Ukraine needs to know how many enterprises actually work in industry, construction, trade, logistics, IT and services — this affects government programs, regional development and negotiations with international partners. The renewed classification should make the statistical picture of the economy more transparent and compatible with European data.
