On June 7, the cabinet of ministers of Ukraine voted for a draft law On regulating the circulation of plants of the hemp genus (Cannabis) for medical, industrial purposes, scientific and scientific and technical activities to create conditions for expanding patients' access to the necessary treatment for oncological diseases and post-traumatic stress disorders resulting from the war.
"We understand the negative effects of the war on mental health. We understand the number of people who will need medical treatment as a result of this impact. And we understand that there is no time to wait," health minister Vyktor Liashko.
As of today, the legal framework for manufacturing medicines based on cannabis in Ukraine is already ready. The production cycle will include the cultivation of hemp, the extraction of cannabis, the manufacture of drugs and the conditions for distributing medication to medical institutions.
"Communication campaigns against the production of cannabis preparations deliberately equate drugs based on it and illicit cannabis to level its value as a medicine and discredit the very idea of its use for medical purposes," Vyktor Liashko.
It should be remembered that medical cannabis is a non-narcotic drug.
"Medical cannabis contains cannabidiol, which does not have a pronounced psychoactive effect, so it is not interesting for recreational use," the minister.
Although the treatment of cannabis-based drugs is not similar to psychotropic medications, the government imposes control over the cultivation, production, and distribution of raw materials for medicines.
Ukraine will develop this new branch of medicine. Cannabis preparations will be used to treat spasms and seizures, anorexia, anxiety disorders, and PTSD. These drugs are essential for reducing pain in palliative patients with cancer and HIV.
