Ukraine sharply increased potato imports in 2025, highlighting how quickly the domestic fresh produce balance can shift. For investors, this is a practical signal about price volatility, supply chain bottlenecks, and where capital spending can stabilize margins.
According to customs statistics, imports reached 138.41 thousand tonnes in January to December 2025, up 5.3 times versus 2024. In value terms, imports climbed to USD 74.82 million. The main suppliers were Poland, Egypt, and the Netherlands.
What changed in the market
A jump of this scale typically reflects a combination of factors: seasonal gaps, quality and calibration issues, and the need to cover retail demand when local supply is not sufficient. Imports also become more attractive when logistics routes are stable and buyer contracts favor predictable volumes.
Exports remained limited
Potato exports stayed small relative to the domestic market. In 2025, export volumes were about 2.38 thousand tonnes, slightly lower than in 2024. However, export revenue was marginally higher, suggesting better pricing or a different product mix in external sales. The key buyers were Moldova, Azerbaijan, and Georgia.
Implications for investors and operators
Higher imports can compress farm gate prices in certain periods while lifting standards expectations across the chain. The most defensible investment plays are often not in raw trading, but in infrastructure that reduces losses and improves marketability: storage with temperature control, sorting and packaging, and contracted supply programs for retailers and processors.
- Market signal: domestic supply balance can swing quickly, increasing price and margin volatility
- Trade structure: dependence on a few supplier countries creates concentration risk
- Opportunity: storage, sorting, packaging, and quality control to cut losses and raise realizable prices
- Operator focus: contract planning, better forecasting, and logistics reliability
- Risk watch: rapid policy shifts and seasonal shocks can change import economics fast
