Nuclear fuel was produced by Westinghouse and Ukrainian Energoatom experts for VVER-1000 reactors. These nuclear reactors were a project of the Soviet Union. Soviet fuel (which, consequently, became Russian) was used to operate the reactors. Thus, Energoatom replaces Russian fuel in nuclear reactors.
This is just the 1st batch of nuclear fuel. And already, it can replace the Russian substance with the American one in 440 reactors. Note that within the framework of the agreement, the first American fuel in the reactor of Ukraine should have appeared only by 2025. However, due to the outbreak of a full-scale war by the Russian Federation and its attacks on the energy structure of Ukraine, the plans of the American corporation changed. Also, Ukraine has already abandoned the services of the Russian Federation and is actively developing in all possible segments.
"Next, we will work to replace Russia in this area (fuel production). There are already agreements with certain countries," the minister of energy of Ukraine, Herman Halushchenko, said.
