Ukraine Receives Mine Countermeasure Ship from the Netherlands, Another Expected by Year-End

Dutch Defense Minister Ruben Brekelmans visits Kyiv as the Netherlands transfers an Alkmaar-class minehunter to strengthen Ukraine’s naval capabilities

Strengthening Ukraine’s Naval Defense

Ukraine has officially received a mine countermeasure ship from the Netherlands, marking a new stage in cooperation between the two countries in the field of maritime security.
The transfer took place during a visit by a Dutch defense delegation, led by Minister of Defense Ruben Brekelmans and Commander-in-Chief of the Dutch Armed Forces General Onno Eichelsheim, to Kyiv.

According to Admiral Oleksiy Neizhpapa, Commander of the Ukrainian Navy, discussions focused on the security situation in the Black Sea region, future defense cooperation, and experience exchange in modern technological warfare.

“I expressed gratitude for the significant efforts and fruitful cooperation within the framework of the Coalition of Naval Capabilities of Ukraine. The support of the Netherlands makes our fleet stronger and more effective in the fight against Russia,”
— said Admiral Neizhpapa.

First Alkmaar-Class Ship Delivered

Ukraine has already received one Alkmaar-class mine countermeasure ship from its partners, with another expected by the end of 2025.
Ukrainian crews are currently undergoing intensive training to master the new vessel’s systems and operational procedures.

These minehunters are being transferred as part of the Naval Capabilities Coalition, which aims to modernize Ukraine’s fleet and enhance its ability to maintain maritime security amid ongoing Russian aggression.

What Is the Alkmaar-Class Minehunter?

The Alkmaar-class mine countermeasure ship (MCMV) is a modern NATO-standard warship designed to detect, classify, and neutralize sea mines that threaten shipping and naval operations.

⚙️ Key Features

  • Sonar systems for advanced underwater mine detection.

  • Remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) for safe mine neutralization.

  • Modern navigation and communication systems for operations in complex maritime conditions.

  • Lightweight composite hull, minimizing magnetic signature to avoid triggering mines.

These ships are widely used to protect key sea routes, ports, and coastal zones, ensuring safe maritime navigation.

Strategic Importance

The transfer of Alkmaar-class ships marks a significant step in rebuilding Ukraine’s naval potential and expanding its Black Sea and Danube security presence.
It also underscores the long-term partnership between Ukraine and the Netherlands, both within NATO’s defense cooperation framework and through the Ukraine Defense Contact Group’s maritime coalition.

By year-end, Ukraine’s fleet will have two fully operational mine countermeasure vessels, improving its ability to secure trade corridors and humanitarian maritime routes.
