Ukraine recovery may rely on science, energy resilience and AI

Budanov says reconstruction should use evidence-based approaches and advanced technologies

Ukraine’s recovery after the war should be built on science, innovation and resilient infrastructure. Kyrylo Budanov discussed these priorities during a meeting with American astrophysicist Paul Sutter, focusing on practical technologies that could support reconstruction.

The discussion covered energy distribution solutions designed to protect infrastructure from repeated attacks, land restoration using plants and deeper cooperation between Ukrainian and American universities in artificial intelligence.

Technology as a recovery tool

The central idea is that reconstruction should not simply replace what was destroyed. Ukraine needs systems that are more resilient, decentralised and easier to protect. Energy networks, logistics, communications and public services can be rebuilt with lessons learned during the war.

Scientific approaches may also matter for polluted land, damaged industrial areas and communities that need affordable recovery tools. Plant-based soil restoration, new materials and data-driven planning can reduce costs and make projects more targeted.

Artificial intelligence is another potential area of cooperation. If universities and research teams build joint programmes, Ukraine can use AI for infrastructure modelling, energy demand planning, demining support and public-sector services. The challenge is to turn ideas into projects that work outside conference rooms.
