Ukraine Reforms Forest Sector

Measures in this direction are spelled out in the draft state strategy for forest management until 2035. The document is currently being approved by the authorities. The lack of reforms in the forest sector leads to annual losses of the state, territorial communities and society as a whole.

Minister of environmental protection and natural resources of Ukraine Roman Abramovsky presented the concept of forestry reform and development in Ukraine.

"The size of the area of Ukrainian forests is one of the last in Europe and is about 16% of the territory. To find out accurate information about their number, species composition, the volume of wood in each of the studied areas - we will conduct a national forest inventory and extrapolate these data to all forest resources of Ukraine," said Roman Abramovsky.

The total forest area of Ukraine is 10.4 million hectares. The average age of stands is about 60 years, there is a gradual aging of forests, which affects their sanitary condition. Forests of Ukraine are formed by more than 30 species of tree species, among which pine (Pinus silvestris), oak (Quercus robur), beech (Fagus silvatica), spruce (Picea abies), birch (Betula pendula), alder (Alnus glutinosa), ash ( Fraxinus excelsior), hornbeam (Carpinus betulus), fir (Abies alba). Coniferous plantations make up 43% of the total area, in particular pine 35%. Hardwood plantations 43%.
