Ukraine’s retail trade turnover increased in January-May 2026, showing that consumer activity remains alive even under wartime constraints. According to the State Statistics Service, retail turnover rose by 9.2 percent compared with the same period of 2025.
In May alone, retail trade was 10.9 percent higher than in May 2025. Total turnover for the first five months of 2026 exceeded 1.19 trillion hryvnias, which makes the sector one of the visible indicators of domestic economic movement.
Retail as a signal of demand
The figures do not remove pressure on household budgets, logistics costs or regional business risks. Still, growth in retail turnover means that supermarket chains, local stores, delivery networks and consumer services continue to move goods through the economy.
The retail market is not just a consumer statistic. It shows whether households, logistics and trade networks are still capable of supporting everyday economic circulation.
If growth continues, it may help small and medium-sized suppliers plan production and inventory with more confidence during the second half of the year.
