Ukraine increased rolled steel output in May

Metallurgical plants raised monthly production of rolled steel, pig iron and steel

Ukrainian metallurgical plants increased production of commercial rolled steel in May 2026. According to Ukrmetalurgprom data, output rose by 16.7 percent compared with April and by 2.5 percent year on year, reaching 537.8 thousand tonnes.

Pig iron production also improved during the month, rising by 14.5 percent from April to 634.4 thousand tonnes. Steel output reached 629.4 thousand tonnes, which was 21.7 percent higher than in the previous month, although still slightly lower than a year earlier.

Monthly recovery remains uneven

The May figures show that Ukrainian metallurgy can still restore output when logistics, energy supply and order books allow. At the same time, the broader five-month picture remains weaker. In January-May, steel production declined by 6.1 percent year on year, pig iron by 0.6 percent and rolled steel by 6.7 percent.

This contrast matters for industrial policy. A strong month indicates operational flexibility, but the sector still depends on stable electricity, transport routes, raw material supply and access to export markets. Any disruption quickly affects production volumes.

For investors and industrial buyers, metallurgy remains one of the indicators of Ukraine’s economic resilience. Growth in rolled steel output supports machine building, construction supply chains and exports, but sustained recovery will require predictable logistics and stronger demand.
