Government Moves Toward Digital Food Safety
Ukraine is developing a new electronic system in the field of food safety and consumer protection – eFood. The initiative was announced by the State Consumer Protection Service, which emphasized that the platform will bring greater transparency and efficiency for businesses and citizens alike.
According to Solomiya Starosolska, Advisor to the Head of the State Consumer Protection Service and Head of the Digitalization Office:
“As a result of the implementation of eFood, businesses and citizens will be able to interact with the State Consumer Protection Service faster and easier, receive better services and be confident in the transparency of procedures. This is a step towards a modern digital state, where people’s comfort and safety become the main priority.”
What eFood Will Change
The system introduces full digital interaction between businesses, citizens, and regulators. Among the key features:
-
Online submission of documents and permits without physical visits.
-
Reduced administrative burden for entrepreneurs and civil servants.
-
Elimination of queues and paper bureaucracy.
-
Traceability and transparency of all procedures.
-
Enhanced data protection and digital security.
This will allow both producers and consumers to have greater confidence in the quality and safety of food products on the Ukrainian market.
Compliance with European Standards
The eFood system is fully aligned with European practices and the EU Digital Single Market principles, which promote:
-
digital transformation of public services,
-
standardized approaches to food safety and consumer protection,
-
cross-border recognition of digital procedures.
By adopting eFood, Ukraine moves closer to EU membership obligations while also making its domestic regulatory system more competitive and predictable.
Why It Matters for Business and Consumers
For businesses, eFood means:
-
faster approvals,
-
reduced costs on paperwork,
-
improved transparency in inspections and controls.
For consumers, the system ensures:
-
greater confidence in food safety,
-
easier access to information about product quality,
-
protection from fraudulent or unsafe products.
