Although Canada currently does not possess NASAMS, it is set to receive them by the end of 2024.
The delivery stems from a joint order placed by Canada and the United States with Raytheon for 10 NASAMS systems, one of which will be allocated to Ukraine. Despite being promised in January 2023, bureaucratic delays slowed the process of transferring the system.
Key Details about NASAMS
- NASAMS is a medium-range air defense system developed in partnership between the American company Raytheon and Norwegian firm Kongsberg.
- It was first created in 1993, with development taking four years.
- The system features a multifunctional AN/TPQ-64 radar, a Scania P113 undercarriage launcher, and AMRAAM guided missiles.
- Capabilities: Maximum range of 40 km, capable of hitting targets at altitudes up to 16 km.
- Cost: The system costs approximately $300 million, with individual missiles priced between $1 million and $2.5 million.
Ukraine has been utilizing NASAMS since fall 2022, thanks to its partners, and the arrival of another system from Canada will further strengthen its air defense.
