Ukraine’s Defense Industry Set to Grow as Global Demand for Security Surges

As defense spending skyrockets globally, Ukraine’s military-industrial complex is entering a period of unprecedented opportunity and international relevance

The growing number of military conflicts and geopolitical tensions worldwide is significantly increasing global demand for defense capabilities. According to People’s Deputy Ihor Kopytin, Chairman of the Subcommittee on Defense Industry and Technical Modernization of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on National Security, this trend presents a strategic opportunity for Ukraine's defense sector to expand its influence and capacity.

Record-High Global Military Spending in 2024

In 2024, global military expenditures reached a record $2.7 trillion, driven by growing threats in Europe, Asia, the Middle East, and Africa. Five countries—the United States, China, Russia, Germany, and Indianow account for 60% of this spending.

  • 🇺🇸 USA: $997 billion (+5.7%)

  • 🇨🇳 China: $314 billion (+7%)

  • 🇬🇧 UK: $81.8 billion (+2.8%)

  • 🇫🇷 France: $64.7 billion (+6.1%)

States are ready to invest tens and hundreds of billions in strengthening their security. This means surging global demand for weapons and military technology,” — said Ihor Kopytin.

Ukraine's Defense Industry: From $9B to $35B Potential

Ukraine is already playing a significant role in meeting global defense needs. In 2024, Ukraine's defense manufacturers produced $9 billion worth of weapons. According to Kopytin, this number could grow to $35 billion in 2025, positioning Ukraine as a regional defense manufacturing leader.

Today, Ukraine produces over 30% of the weapons and ammunition used by its Armed Forces. However, up to 40% of its defense needs are still covered by importsmaking local production expansion vital for both military readiness and economic resilience.

Strategic Partnerships and Global Interest

Foreign defense giants are taking note. German holding Rheinmetall is constructing a major production facility in Ukraine, expected to be completed by 2026. Kopytin notes that the factory’s projected output will exceed initial expectations.

Ukraine’s defense sector is attracting global interest for its innovation, resilience, and capacity to scale,” he emphasized.

With shifting U.S. rhetoric on military support and the EU ramping up defense investments, Ukraine has a chance to position itself as a core contributor to European security.

Rising Risks, Rising Demand

From simmering tensions between India and Pakistan to continued Russian aggression, global hotspots are pushing countries to diversify defense suppliers. Ukraine’s ability to provide cost-effective, battle-tested technologies makes it an increasingly attractive partner.

Kopytin warns that delayed domestic production may leave Ukraine vulnerable to global price spikes in arms imports. “Strengthening our own defense production is not just an economic opportunity—it’s a national security imperative,” he said.

Final Thought

As global defense budgets expand, Ukraine has the potential to emerge not only as a consumer of military aid but also as a trusted supplier and innovator. By investing in local production, building strategic partnerships, and expanding industrial capacity, Ukraine can turn global instability into a powerful lever for growth, sovereignty, and long-term security.
