What Should Ukrainians Prepare for Due to the Destruction of Kakhovka HPP

Reduction in the amount/increase in the cost of food, stoppage of heavy production, losses in billions dollars, nuclear danger

Kakhovska HPP was part of a cascade of 6 HPPs on the Dnipro river: Kyivska, Kanivska, Kremenchuska, Serednyodniprovska, Dniprovska and Kakhovska (you see them on the cover). Thus, the destruction of 1 station disrupted the operation of the entire Dnipro cascade: "Ukrhydroenergo" closed all the locks and stopped the operation of the remaining 5 HPPs.

The Kakhovka hydroelectric dam created a man-made sea (Kakhovka reservoir) with 18 billion m³ of fresh water: this water would be enough to feed the planet's entire population for 2 years. The Kakhovka sea fed Zaporizhzhia and the region, industrial towns of the Dnipro region, the cooling basin of the Zaporizhzhia NPP on the left bank of the Dnipro river, and the entire irrigation system on the left bank of the Dnipro — southern Ukraine. And now this sea does not exist.

How will it affect the grocery basket of Ukrainians, food prices and the economy of Ukraine. In the south of Ukraine, all the melons and gourds that Ukrainians ate, as well as grains and legumes for export, were grown. Now the arable land of this region has turned into a swamp, and as a result, the food price in Ukraine is 2-3 times higher. Plus, the Ukrainian farmers will no longer have anything to sell abroad. That is, the state will have no profit from exports. Until the new Kakhovka dam is built, Ukrainian agriculture will not return to normal. And construction will take at least 6 years.

The largest metallurgical plant in the Dnipro region, the Krivyy Rih plant, also depended on the Kakhovka reservoir. While there is no reservoir, production is on hold. These are jobs, salaries, profit from exports, and a blow to the vital activity of specialised businesses. In order to restore the Kryvyi Rih plant and its cooperation with the buyers of its product, it is necessary to build water pipes. However, construction will take at least 2 years and at least $4.101 million.

Nuclear danger. The Kakhovka sea cooled the nuclear reactors of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant. Although the situation is currently under control, while the station is under occupation, no one is safe.
